It started with early morning [4:30 a.m.] consecutive phone calls allegedly from Rogers’ Wireless. Attempts to reject the calls, block the calls failed. Eventually the calling stopped, Derek Smith and his wife went back to sleep.
Upon awakening, when Derek checked his cell phone the number had been ported. It was gone. His SIM card was no longer active.
What is phone porting?
Essentially, when you want to change service providers you take your cell phone, let’s say, from Rogers Wireless to Bell Mobility. If you want to keep your same cell phone number, in the past, you would visit the service provider, provide identification and sign authorization forms to complete the transaction. In this age of advanced technology ports are allowed with and/or without in person, written consent.
Here’s the problem
Some scammers, related to Bampton man in India, got into our phone. As soon as they get into your phone, they have access to everything, your passwords, emails, bank accounts. Essentially what happened to us was our bank accounts began to drain. Transfers were made. They got everything. They completely emptied our personal bank accounts. We have suffered a major loss. Hopefully the financial institution is able to make us whole.
Please listen to details and some helpful advice
Derek discloses how others were scammed, how the scammers used his information to expand their reach, the dreadful aftermath to remedy, and some advice to safeguard you and family. 15:38 mins
