Why Vitamin D Is Called a Steroid Hormone

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble compound existing primarily as vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol) and vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol). Although commonly labeled as a vitamin and available in supplements, its function is far more complex, operating as a sophisticated signaling molecule. This creates a classification paradox because its structure and mechanism of action align closely with those of steroid hormones. Modern biology recognizes its primary function as a hormone that regulates physiological systems, despite the historical confusion over its name.

Why It’s Still Called a Vitamin

The original classification of Vitamin D as a vitamin is purely a historical accident, reflecting the state of nutritional science in the early 20th century.

A classic vitamin is defined as an organic compound required in the diet because the organism cannot synthesize it endogenously. Vitamin D initially fit this definition because a dietary source was necessary to prevent rickets when sunlight exposure was insufficient. However, the body can synthesize Vitamin D3 endogenously in the skin upon exposure to UVB light, which disqualifies it from the strict, modern definition of a vitamin. The name has simply persisted despite the later discovery of its hormonal synthesis and function.  https://scienceinsights.org/why-vitamin-d-is-called-a-steroid-hormone/

Good post. I have been reading a book called Death By Injection by Eustace Mullins. It was written in 1988 and traces back the roots of the medical industrial complex pioneered the Rockefeller gang. It is eye opening and heartbreaking, the lies that we have been told and the poisoning that humanity has endured since then. They make us sick and then sell us the cure, whether allopathic or supplemental. An endless circle profiteering through death and suffering.
