The biology of unprocessed emotions

The one thing I want to say about emotions is that they do not have an expiration date. They will never in your life work themselves out. If you didn’t process it you’re still paying for it. Right now while you’re sitting here, your nervous system is running an open tab. Every emotion you choked down instead of feeling it, every bit of grief you skipped over, every rage you smiled through, every time you said I’m fine and your chest was on fire. All of that goes somewhere and wherever it went, it started accumulating interest.

The thesis for tonight is that every unprocessed emotion becomes a line of credit your nervous system is silently paying interest on. What we call personality is usually a collection of unpaid invoices from childhood. If you think to yourself “I’m just an impatient person” that’s not a temperament you have. It’s a bill you haven’t paid. Your need to stay busy all the time isn’t because you’re ambitious. It’s a payment you’re making on something. If you can’t sit in silence and think “Oh, that’s just a preference I have.” That’s actually avoidance of a creditor somewhere. Let me give you the biology of this first, so it doesn’t sound like a yoga retreat. Let’s go deeper into this stuff.
