On July 22nd, 2026, a county on the Georgia coast made an announcement. Open AI would be building a data center campus there for roughly $20 billion taking up around 1,400 acres. The next day, the county held a public information session so residents could ask questions.

The announcement came first and the public meeting came second. At that meeting, a resident named Diane said, “This would have been helpful six months ago.”

That sentence gets to the heart of this story because by the time residents were sitting in that room asking questions, the tax package had already been approved. The vote happened at a county development board meeting. It was a public meeting and the agenda was posted in advance. But the residents had to know that that was the meeting that actually mattered. And the same problem shows up somewhere other than one county in Georgia. It shows up on your electric bill.
