Blame for the destruction of West Maui is falling upon Hawaiian Electric who knew as early as four years ago there was a risk of fire due to their own negligence of maintaining power lines. But did nothing. Hawaiian Electric, who is owned by Vanguard and BlackRock, has been shifting their focus to clean energy. But in order to Build Back Better, they must first destroy the old system. And so the power was left on to feed the fires.
Gut wrenching
The outdoor siren warning system on Maui is one of the most advanced and maintained warning systems on Earth. Residents are accustomed to monthly tests and on the day of the fire, no sirens went off. The director in charge of this warning system was at a FEMA disaster seminar in Oahu as the fires were devastating the people of Maui.
When asked if he regretted not sounding the alarm, he said no. Because he was worried people would run into the fire. Instead, they burned to death. Including an untold number of children who were home alone that morning because of a school cancellation.
The water wasn’t on. Fire hydrants were dry. And the Deputy Director of Water Resource Management, who was named an Obama Foundation Leader, refused to release water for the west Maui fires until it was too late. He says that in order to share water, Hawaiians need to discuss equity.

West Kelowna, B.C. state of emergency
The McDougall Creek wildfire is currently mapped at 6,800 hectares but that figure hasn’t changed since morning and heavy gusting winds are expected to fuel its movement.
As is, there are more than 2,400 evacuation orders in place and more than 5,000 evacuation alerts in place. That number has grown hourly, but a total isn’t readily available. How many homes were destroyed has yet to become clear, though the worst damage is believed to be in Trader’s Cove, Bear Creek Road at the north end of West Kelowna.
Wildfire smoke is spreading as flames ravage N.W.T., West Kelowna
As wildfires maintain a fierce grip on western and northern regions of Canada, the smoke is projected to spread across the Prairie provinces into the weekend, and potentially further east across the country.
A state of emergency was declared in Kelowna, B.C. on Thursday and residents of Yellowknife, the capital of the Northwest Territories, have until 12 p.m. MT on Friday to evacuate as smoke continues to billow in the area.
BlueSky Canada, a forecast system showing weather and forest fire information, projects the wildfire smoke from western Canada will make its way across the country into Friday evening and even stretch as far as New York City.

Just in.
SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, Canary Islands (AP) — Firefighters in Spain’s Canary Islands are battling dense smoke and high temperatures to try to control the worst wildfire in decades on the main tourist island of Tenerife, officials said Friday.
The fire started late Tuesday in the north of the island and has forced authorities in eight municipalities to order the evacuation of more than 4,500 people and the confinement of thousands more. Confinement means residents are strongly advised to stay indoors with windows closed. 02:39 mins
No injuries been reported so far.
Regional President Fernando Clavijo said Friday’s efforts would be crucial to containing the fire. The air quality in several municipalities remains hazardous and vulnerable people are advised not to leave their homes, he said.
Residents of La Esperanza have been put under a precautionary lockdown.
