Carbon tax increases Canada

The federal government has been increasing the carbon tax each year. In April 2024, the Trudeau government increased the carbon tax to $80 per tonne from $65 per tonne, costing drivers an extra 3.3 cents per litre at the pump.

April 01, 2025 the carbon tax will become more expensive again, rising another $15 per tonne to $95. The carbon tax is scheduled to increase another $15 each year until it reaches $170 a tonne in 2030, according to federal government targets.

What’s next for corporate greenhouse gas [GHG] accounting?

The origin of greenhouse gas (GHG) accounting, or measuring emissions from companies and other entities, dates to the late 1990s, but interest has grown exponentially in the past few years with the proliferation of both voluntary and more recently, mandatory corporate climate disclosure initiatives.

In 2025, large listed European companies will need to publish their first sustainability statement under the European Sustainability Reporting Standards. Small and medium enterprises will need to publish in 2026.

Starting in 2026, large public U.S. companies will be required under the new SEC rule to report scope 1 and 2 emissions deemed to be material to investors. The new rule was finalized March 6, 2024.
