How do you create a Brave New World

With people who already have their own memories — their own individuality?

That question drove me to write The Indoctrinated Brain. In this opening lecture, I explain why Aldous Huxley and George Orwell were not writing science fiction. They were mapping mechanisms — mechanisms that, as I will show across this 7-part series, have a precise neurobiological basis and a very concrete application in the events of the past several years.

This is Part 1 of my full lecture recorded at the IPAK-EDU Director's Science Webinar on March 11, 2024. I begin with a question from the host: did the pandemic prompt me to revisit these dystopian works? The answer is yes — because the pandemic gave them a new, and deeply unsettling, relevance.

Huxley's Brave New World does not describe a population that is coerced. It describes a population that has been shaped, at the biological level, not to question. My research shows how that shaping works — and why its side effects include rising rates of depression and Alzheimer's disease.
