EU chief says she wants Canada to become the bloc’s 1st associate member
Thanks to Judy for this heads up!
Sept 16, 2026
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said Europe wants to open the door for Canada to become an “associate member” of the European Union.
Prime Minister Mark Carney listened on in the front row as von der Leyen laid out key pillars for stronger co-operation between Europe and Canada in Strasbourg, France.
In her state of the union address, she said the two must “urgently reimagine” their partnership, and move beyond just a free-trade agreement.
“I would like to work with you on opening the door for Canada to be the first associate member of the EU,” von der Leyen said on Wednesday, drawing a standing ovation.
Carney then nodded, rose from his seat, approached von der Leyen and embraced her. He briefly waved to the chamber before returning to his seat.
“We share one ocean, one set of values, one way of seeing the world,” she added. “And we will now build our shared future as well — thank you for being here.”

Brussels Eyes Private Savings as Public Money Runs Out
Aug 31, 2026
On August 27 at the MEDEF entrepreneurs’ summit, the European Commission president told French business leaders that Europe has a problem: too much of its people’s money is sitting in bank accounts instead of being put to work for “European companies.” She put a number on it: about €10 trillion in household deposits. In French she called that savings paresseuse — lazy. The official English transcript softened it to “sitting idle.”
Then came the policy pitch. Europe must put this money “to the service of its companies.” The vehicle is the Savings and Investments Union. The tools she listed: securitization, bank and insurance investment rules, market integration, and supervision. Brussels claims the package could unlock up to €470 billion in extra investment. She wants a deal by the end of 2026 — with all 27 member states if possible, “or, if necessary, with those that are ready.”. Is Canada "joining" the EU so that Canadian banks can become part of the corrupt, money laundering Eurodollar system? "In simple terms, a Eurodollar is a US dollar that is deposited in banks outside of the United states. The Eurodollar market is a key player in the global financial system, with an estimated $13.7 trillion in circulation as of 2019. From the point of view of US banks, Eurodollars are a way to expand their reach and access a larger pool of capital. For foreign banks, Eurodollars offer a way to hold assets in a stable currency that is widely accepted in international trade."
