Electromagnetic Fields, Voltage-Gated Calcium Channels, and Public Health
June 27, 2025
Humanity has wrapped the planet in an invisible web of electromagnetic fields (EMFs). From baby monitors to 5 G macro-cells, the spectrum that once carried only sunlight now pulses with billions of man-made signals. Engineers celebrate this as progress; biologists issue cautions; the general public mostly shrugs—until symptoms appear.
The stakes are enormous
If biochemist-turned-physicist Professor Martin Pall is right, today’s exposure limits—anchored to tissue heating thresholds set by bodies such as ICNIRP—are as outdated as asbestos safety rules in the 1950s. This article unpacks the seminar, embeds it in the wider literature, and charts a path toward biologically rational policy.
What Are VGCCs?
Voltage-Gated Calcium Channels: Biology’s Open Door
Every excitable cell—neurons, cardiac pacemakers, endocrine cells—uses VGCCs to admit Ca²⁺ ions when the membrane potential fluctuates. Calcium is a master switch; once inside, it launches cascades governing gene expression, neurotransmitter release, hormone secretion, and even apoptosis.
EMFs as an Electrical Picklock
Pall collated 26 in-vitro and in-vivo studies where nanotesla-to-microwatt fields opened VGCCs. Whether static magnets, 50/60 Hz wiring currents, or gigahertz microwaves, the pattern held: block the channel—block the effect. researchgate.net
Biophysical Plausibility
Low-frequency photons indeed carry too little energy to break chemical bonds, critics argue. But a field can tug on the channel’s charged voltage sensor, subtly prying it open. Panagopoulos’ modeling shows that piconewton forces are sufficient—especially for L-type channels hovering millivolts from threshold.
Downstream Dominoes
Once excess Ca²⁺ floods the cytosol, three major pathways ignite:

6G next generation technology
Aug 08, 2026
Inside a lab in Nanjing, China, researchers achieved something that sounds impossible: a wireless signal moving through open air at 206.25 gigabits per second. That is roughly 100 times faster than the 5G connection on your phone, and it was done without any cables or wires.
The breakthrough centers on two key pieces of technology. First, a team at Peking University and the City University of Hong Kong built a tiny chip just 11 millimeters long that converts wireless signals into light, allowing it to handle 9 different frequency bands on a single piece of silicon, including terahertz waves that the rest of the world had given up on. Second, researchers at Purple Mountain Laboratories in Nanjing, working with China Mobile and Fudan University, proved that those terahertz frequencies can actually carry massive amounts of data through real city air.
Where 6G stands today
Nov 04, 2026
As operators extend today’s 5G networks, standards bodies are defining what the next generation must deliver.
In updated guidance issued in September 2026, the Next Generation Mobile Networks (NGMN) Alliance urged the industry to judge 6G migration options by hardware impact, implementation feasibility, and total cost of ownership. That is the clearest test of the transition: not how impressive a 6G demonstration looks, but whether the resulting network can be deployed without repeating 5G’s complexity and cost. 6G Will Expose Humans to largely untested terahertz radiation
By Nicolas Hulscher
While 5G networks operate across frequencies ranging from approximately 0.6 to 48 GHz, 6G networks are expected to extend into terahertz (THz) frequencies. Under laboratory conditions, THz radiation has already been shown in human-derived cells and tissues to induce:
DNA damage and DNA-damage signaling
Genomic instability
Impaired neural stem-cell proliferation
Disrupted cell-cycle activity
Altered gene expression
Mitochondrial dysfunction
Inflammation
Apoptosis and cell death
