A four-dollar box of borax sitting on the hardware store shelf, labeled as a laundry booster, replaces roughly eight hundred dollars a year of cleaning, pest control, gardening, and home-maintenance products.
In 1979 the Environmental Protection Agency reclassified borax as a pesticide — not for safety concern, for a regulatory reason that meant manufacturers could no longer print pest-control instructions on the box without an expensive registration process for each use. The instructions that appeared on borax packaging since the early 1900s — kills roaches, kills ants, repels mice, eliminates mold, treats wood against termites — were quietly removed. The Amish communities of Lancaster County and Holmes County never read the boxes, learned every use from their mothers and grandmothers, and kept the full knowledge alive while it disappeared from every other American kitchen.

The twenty-five separate borax applications are each confirmed by named institutional research. Everyone confirmed by Penn State, Oregon State, the University of Arkansas. Real papers, real names. I will give you every single one. And the last one, the 25th, comes from a 1963 county extension bulletin pulled from circulation within 18 months of being printed. If you already own your home, especially if it was built before 1980, this is going to matter to you more than you think.
