Destiny

Each of us was born with freewill choice to master our own destiny. So, individuals unwilling to acknowledge and accept that techniques are used to manipulate the minds of man, who care not how, who, why and what to do about it, empower and sustain Edward L. Bernays’ systematic and highly effective propaganda, advertising and public relations techniques.

Propaganda Part I

In his 1928 book, ‘Propaganda’, Bernays hypothesized that by understanding the group mind it would be possible to manipulate people's behavior without their even realizing it. These techniques appeal to the unconscious mind, deliberately sidestepping the conscious, rational mind.

Manipulation of group mind

Bernays believed the informed few must manipulate the habits and opinions of the masses to maintain order in a ‘democratic’ society. He referred to this manipulation as the ‘engineering of consent’ (Bernays and Cutler, 1955).

In 1947, Bernays published an essay entitled “The Engineering of Consent,” which he defined as the art of manipulating people, specifically Americans, whom Bernays described as “fundamentally irrational” and not to be trusted.

Manipulation of the public mind is something ruling entities have done throughout history to maintain control. However, Bernays and his peers developed systematic and highly effective propaganda, advertising and ’public relations’, amplified now through a new generation of mind controllers using burgeoning technologies of data mining and social media to inject their control deeper into our minds than their forebears could have dreamed possible.

Computers As Persuasive Technology [CAPT]

Technology is used to change people's attitudes and behaviors through interface using ‘hot triggers’, as they are known, i.e. smartphone chimes diverting attention, thumbs-up icon on news feeds, ‘Like’ statistics illustrating how popular we are. Hot triggers kick off behavioral loops in the subconscious mind. Successful apps are those that trigger a momentary need and then provide an instant solution. The solution sparks a micro dose of endorphins in our brains that feel good. So, like rats on a wheel, we find ourselves getting addicted, going back for more.

Mind control doesn't stop at social media

Do you believe in autonomy when you search a topic using Google? Think again. Psychologist Robert Epstein unearthed a massive subliminal control of what he calls Search Engine Manipulation Effect, or SEME.

This effect is based on the fact that when doing a search, individuals click half the time on one of the first two results. More than 90% of clicks are on the top ten links listed on the first page. There might be thousands of other web pages containing our key words, but Google decides which ones we're going to read.

Bernays’ publicity campaigns were stuff of legend

Bernays provided leaders the means to “control and regiment the masses according to our will without their knowing about it.” To do so, it was necessary to appeal not to the rational part of the mind, but to the unconscious.

Bernays was among the first to use psychological techniques in advertising. To overcome “sales resistance” to cigarette smoking among women, Bernays staged a demonstration at the 1929 Easter parade, having fashionable young women flaunt their “torches of freedom.”

It’s about control not money
