I loved Paul Levy's books on wetiko. I was in a book club on one of his books and Paul would be present sometimes at the meetings too. The main players in the group didn't know they were doing wetiko to me and my partner. They merely used wetiko as an intellectual reference but couldn't identify it coming out of themselves. It wasn't the whole group like this but the one who ran it. Hosts often commit wetiko because they want to make decisions for the group and the group lets them because we have been taught that the host makes the rules right? Well no that's not how it works if we want to get out of wetiko. Wetiko is another term for selfishness and it also incorporates other negative characteristics as well. When people try to silence others, kick them out of groups because they cannot bear to hear a truth they are not used to hearing, that's wetiko. We need to talk about wetiko a lot more. Sometimes the ones who tout compassion the most do wetiko as much as anyone. The opposite to wetiko is giving everyone freedom of speech.
